BEIJING, June 30 -- "Any attempt to contain China with Taiwan, or to help Taiwan reject reunification by force is futile," said Senior Colonel Tan Kefei, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, at a regular press conference on Thursday, when asked to comment on the recent so-called annual national and military security meeting, known as "Monterrey Talks", held by the US and Taiwan.
According to reports, the "Monterrey Talks" discussed the US provision of arms and other military assistance to Taiwan, aiming to help Taiwan improve its asymmetric warfare capability. The US also planned to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan through the State Partnership Program (SPP) of the US National Guard.
The spokesperson pointed out that the Taiwan question has always been the most important and sensitive core issue in China-US relations. If handled improperly, it may have a subversive impact on bilateral relations. He said that US President Joe Biden has promised clearly to the Chinese side that the United States does not support “Taiwan independence”. However, "what the US has done runs counter to what it has said. Its support and connivance for the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces are of a bad nature and have a very bad impact," he slammed.
The spokesperson urged the US to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US Joint Communiqués, cut off the arms sales to Taiwan and the military collusion with Taiwan, and stop any form of official exchanges and military ties with Taiwan.
The spokesperson stressed that any attempt to contain China with Taiwan, or help Taiwan reject reunification by force is futile. China will continue to take firm and effective measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
