Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken to exchange views about developments in Afghanistan on Monday, according to Chinese foreign ministry.

Wang Yi said that the United States should play a constructive role in helping Afghanistan to stabilize, prevent chaos, and rebuild peace. The sudden withdrawal of forces by the United States has already caused a serious negative impact on the situation in Afghanistan. If the next step is to create new problems, it is not a responsible attitude, Wang said.

Wang Yi also said that China is willing to communicate and dialogue with the U.S. on the situation in Afghanistan, so that the country will no longer have a new war or humanitarian disaster.

China hopes all kinds of terrorism and crimes can be curbed so that the Afghan people can stay away from war and rebuild their homeland.

Wang Yi stated that China and the United States are both permanent members of the UN Security Council and important participants in the contemporary international system. China and the United States should work together on global challenges as the international community expects. The U.S. should stop the political oppression and senseless restrictions against China.

The key to peaceful coexistence between the world’s two largest economies is to respect each other’s historical and cultural traditions, each other’s core interests and major concerns, each other’s chosen political system and development path, as well as the basic norms of the international community such as non-interference in others’ internal affairs and peaceful settlement of disputes.

Antony J. Blinken said that the United States recognizes that the future of Afghanistan should be decided by the Afghan people and calls on the Taliban to ensure the safety of all people who wish to leave Afghanistan.

He also said the current situation in Afghanistan is entering a critical phase. The Taliban should make a clean break with all terrorist forces and return to the mainstream of Afghan politics. The U.S. expects China to play an important role in this.

Blinken said that it is very important for the United States and China to maintain communication on major international and regional issues. He agreed that achieving peaceful coexistence between the United States and China is a common goal, and hope that both sides will seek and develop cooperation.
