"China's aircraft carrier isn't a 'paper tiger', but will play a significant role in safeguarding its maritime rights and interests, " Rear Adm. Yin Zhuo said in a recent TV interview.

The building of China's second aircraft carrier is in good shape as the hull blocks have been joined in the dock, said a senior navy official.

The 7% military budget increase in 2017 will be used to support the national defense and military reform, update equipment, improve the training and living environment of grassroot-level troops and so on.

China values freedom and safety of navigation in the South China Sea more than any other country, a spokesperson for the top political advisory body said Thursday.
