BEIJING, May 12 -- On May 11, the Earthquake Relief Headquarters Office under the State Council, the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM), and the People's Government of Gansu Province jointly held in Zhangye City of west China's Gansu Province the "Emergency Mission-2022" earthquake rescue and disaster relief drill targeting plateau and alpine regions. The PLA Western Theater Command formed the military earthquake rescue and relief headquarters in Zhangye, the "epicenter" of the "earthquake", to conduct unified commanding of the participating rescue forces from the PLA and the People's Armed Police (PAP) Force.
The drill simulated a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Ganzhou District, Zhangye of Gansu Province that caused massive housing collapse and casualties. The participating troops practised emergency planning and response, force projection and emergency rescue and relief operations, for the purpose of testing the PLA and PAP's capability of making fast response and carrying out efficient rescue, as well as their capacity of conducting unified commanding, coordinated support and joint operation at times of major disasters.
