COLOMBO, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lanka army on Monday said it had deployed the military police at all entry and exit points of capital Colombo, to assist the police in easing traffic congestion in the city.

In a statement, the army said that under the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, this project was expected to minimize wastage of valuable man hours on roads and help increase the national productivity through punctuality.

"The deployment of Military Police personnel, covering most congested points across the city limits is expected to closely liaise with City Traffic Policemen during peak hours on all seven days of the week," the army said.

In addition, military mobile cars and five motorbikes will continue to monitor congestion, coordinate communication and keep surveillance during peak hours with the objective of alerting the public and encouraging them to use alternative roads, if necessary, the army added.
