Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Geng Shuang held a press conference on March 26, 2019.

Chinese Foreign Ministry's spokesperson Geng Shuang on Tuesday said that China opposes changing the status quo of Golan Heights through unilateral behavior, calling for the avoidance of escalating regional tensions.

"The international community recognizes Golan Heights as occupied," Geng said, adding that the UN Security Council has passed several resolutions urging Israel to withdraw from Golan Heights.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decree on Monday at the start of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying the United States recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights, territory that Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war.

The Golan Heights is located on the border between Israel and Syria. Israel captured the region from Syria in 1967 during the Six Day War.
