The Chinese People’s Liberation Army has described ties between China and Cambodia as a brotherly relationship, a press release issued yesterday said.

The PLA statement said its commander General Han Weiguo praised both countries’ strong relationship while welcoming Lieutenant General Hun Manet, Royal Cambodian Armed Forces’ Army Commander, who led a delegation to China for a five-day visit on Monday.

The RCAF delegation is visiting China at the invitation of the China’s Ministry of Defence with a purpose to strengthen the relationship and cooperation between both countries’ armies.

According to the press release, Gen Han said he was delighted to welcome Lt Gen Manet and the RCAF delegation because of the strong ties between the two countries.

“I hope China and Cambodia will continue to strengthen relations and cooperation under the strategic direction of President Xi Jinping and Samdech Techo Hun Sen to ensure the development of comprehensive cooperation between the two countries,” he said.

In response, Lt Gen Manet thanked Gen Han for the warm welcome he and his delegation received.

“This visit will strengthen the relationship and cooperation of the two countries’ armies,” he said.

Lt Gen Manet also thanked the Chinese government and people of China for actively supporting development in Cambodia.

Army spokesman Brigadier General Mao Phalla yesterday said that Lt Gen Manet’s visit to China is to focus on the relationship and cooperation between the two armies.

“The visit is to strengthen the relationship between the two armies and seek continued assistance from China,” Gen Phalla said.

He noted that Gen Manet will also discuss more joint military exercises with China ahead of next month’s exercises.

Next month’s joint Cambodia-China Golden Dragon 2019 military exercises will be carried out on a larger scale than ever in Kampot province’s Chol Kiri district.

The 15-day joint military drill will focus on counter-terrorism and humanitarian rescue, engineering and natural disaster response.
