With DPRK top leader Kim Jong-un on 3rd trip to China, Singapore meeting, economy high on agenda

Beijing hopes that the outcome of the DPRK-US summit will be fully implemented as it is an important step for the political resolution of the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remark when meeting in Beijing with Kim Jong-un, chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The two leaders agreed to safeguard, consolidate and develop China-DPRK relations and jointly push forward the sound momentum of peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula.

Xi called for all related parties to jointly push forward the peaceful process on the peninsula and said China will play a constructive role as always.

Xi said the peninsula issue has been brought to the right track of being solved through dialogue and negotiation due to the concerted efforts of all related parties, and the situation is moving toward the direction of peace and stability.

Kim has made positive efforts for realizing denuclearization and maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula, he said.

Xi said China speaks highly of the results of the Singapore meeting between Kim and United States President Donald Trump, during which both sides agreed to work toward denuclearization and establish a lasting, stable and peaceful situation on the peninsula.

Kim's special trip to China reflects the great attention he paid to strategic communication between the two parties and the two countries, Xi said.

Kim's two-day visit to China started on Tuesday. It is his third trip to China since March, when he visited Beijing on his first foreign trip since taking office. In May, he traveled to Dalian, Liaoning province, and met with Xi a second time.

Xi said the three meetings with Kim in less than three months indicate the direction for developing relations between the two parties and two countries, opening a new chapter for the China-DPRK relationship.

Whatever the international and regional situation, the CPC and the Chinese government's firm commitment to consolidating and developing bilateral ties will not change, the Chinese people's friendly affection with the people of the DPRK will not change, and China's support for socialist DPRK will not change, he said.

Xi said he stands ready to work with Kim to continue to implement the important consensus reached between the two sides, and push forward the long-term, sound and stable development of the China-DPRK relationship, benefiting the people of both countries.

Noting that this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, Xi said the Chinese people have explored a development path suitable for its own situation and China is glad to see that the DPRK has made the important decision to turn its priorities toward economic development.

The DPRK's development of the socialist cause has entered a new stage in history, and China supports the DPRK's development of its economy, improvement in people's livelihood and taking a development path that suits its conditions, Xi said.

Kim said the Singapore summit has achieved results that conform to the interests of all parties and meet the expectations of the international community.

He said his country thanks and speaks highly of China's important role in promoting denuclearization and maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The DPRK hopes to work with all related parties including China to promote building a lasting and solid peace mechanism on the peninsula, and work together for realizing lasting peace there, Kim said. He also said he was pleased to meet with Xi.

Kim described China as a great and friendly neighbor of DPRK, and Xi as a great leader that the DPRK respects and trusts. He expressed thanks for China's friendship and precious support.

Kim added that he will lead all members of the Workers' Party of Korea and people of the DPRK to implement the consensus reached between him and Xi, elevating the unbreakable DPRK-China relationship to a higher level.

Before the meeting, Xi held a ceremony to welcome Kim at the Great Hall of the People.
