S.Korea to push for recovery of remains of fallen soldiers during Korean War

SEOUL, June 6 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Wednesday that his country will push for the recovery of remains of the fallen soldiers during the 1950-53 Korean War in line with improved relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Moon made the remarks in his address to the Memorial Day ceremony at the National Cemetery in the country's central city of Daejeon.

Moon said that if inter-Korean relations are enhanced, it will be pushed first for to retrieve the remains of the war dead in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a heavily armed border dividing the two countries.

The president said the remains of other foreign soldiers will be able to be recovered together, noting that South Korea will continue to find the last remaining person among soldiers and policemen killed during the Korean War.

Hundreds of thousands of service members remain listed as missing in action from the three-year fratricidal war.

Moon's comment came amid the emerging detente on the Korean Peninsula. Moon and top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un held their surprised second summit on May 26, just a month after holding the third-ever inter-Korean summit on April 27.

The DPRK leader and U.S. President Donald Trump are scheduled to hold the first-ever DPRK-U.S. summit on June 12 in Singapore.
