ALGIERS, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The Algerian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that a "dangerous" terrorist was killed late Monday in the eastern province of Skikda.

"Following a dragging operation in the upper woods of Skikda, an army detachment killed a dangerous terrorist on Monday and recovered a Kalashnikov submachine gun," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The militant, identified as B. Farid, alias Abu Zahra, became a terrorist in 1994, according to the statement.

The Algerian troops killed four terrorists in March, it added.

Earlier in the day, anti-terror troops in Boumerdes and Batna destroyed four terrorist bunkers housing two homemade bombs as well as food and clothes.

In another statement quoted by APS news agency, the Algerian army said seven terrorists surrendered in the anti-terror operation.

A total of seven people suspected of providing support to terrorist groups were arrested in March, it noted.

Figures show the Algerian army destroyed 41 terror bunkers and seized 16 Kalashnikovs, four FM machine guns, one FM-DP machine gun, one G3 pistol, three PKT machine guns, three Simonov semi-automatic rifles, four rifles, 21 firearms and one automatic pistol in March.

Located in a region plagued by unprecedented security and political instability, Algeria is facing terrorist threats, as tens of thousands of troops are deployed on eastern and southern borders to thwart potential intrusion of militants and arms, amid instability in Mali and a civil war hitting Libya.
