BEIJING, Aug. 17 (ChinaMil) -- General Song Puxuan, commander of the Chinese PLA Northern Theater Command (TC), met with Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a combined army brigade under the PLA Northern TC on August 16, 2017.
Gen. Song said that the national defense and military reform led and promoted by Chinese President Xi Jinping is a holistic and revolutionary change. The establishment of the five major Theater Commands of the PLA including the Northern TC is of great significance to the effective maintenance of national security.
The PLA Northern TC is mainly responsible for dealing with security threats from the northern strategic direction, especially the mission of safeguarding the territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests of northern China, Gen. Song added.
Gen. Song noted that China and the US have maintained close communication on major international and regional issues at present. He believes that the relations between the two militaries can become the stabilizer of bilateral relations as long as both sides insist on handling issues from strategic and long-term perspective.
Song reaffirmed China's stance of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the maintenance of peace and stability on the peninsula. He stressed that dialogue and political settlement are the key to resolving the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.
Joseph Dunford said he was very happy to visit the PLA Northern Theater Command and understand more about the achievements of China’s military reform.
The US and China should strengthen communication and cooperation at all levels to continuously build mutual trust and prevent miscalculations and push for more pragmatic results of the two militaries in more fields, Joseph Dunford said.
After the meeting, Joseph Dunford eat lunch and had exchanges with officers and soldiers of the combined brigade of the PLA Northern Theater Command.
