The Chinese government has announced a programme to fund private-sector research and development (R&D) projects in military and related activities.

It is thought to be the first time that Beijing has supported private-sector defence R&D through state funds.

The state-run Chinese newspaper Global Times reported on 18 April that the programme features government investment of CNY6 billion (USD872 million) in up to 2,000 R&D projects to be undertaken by the country's private sector, including companies and research institutes.

The programme will place emphasis on R&D in dual-used technologies under China's civil-military integration (CMI) strategy and will be advertised by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) procurement portal, www.weain.mil.cn.
