BEIJING, Dec. 9 (ChinaMil) -- The College of Defence Studies (CDS) of the PLA's National Defense University (NDU) is the highest institution of foreign military personnel training in China, the students in the college are senior military officers and government defense officials of foreign countries.

The CDS always works for exchanges and cooperation in the fields of international military education, and carries out deep-going study of the frontier theories on defence and security. It has a history of 60 years and has trained nearly ten thousand students from more than 160 countries.

In September this year, Colonel Ildephonse from Burundi came to the CDS to attend the defense and strategic studies course. Before coming to China, he had received trainings in many countries including the United States and Britain.

"A nation full of military wisdom loves peace so much," IIdephonse found out that the training has "Chinese characteristics" unexpectedly. In the CDS, professors told them that in ancient Chinese military thoughts, military forces are to be used only for the maintenance of peace and order. Here, students learn more about how to solve problems, prevent conflicts, stop wars and achieve peace through peaceful means. For this end, the CDS offers the courses on non-traditional security areas including the humanitarian assistance and international peacekeeping operations. There are also courses covering topics from China's political system to defense policy, from diplomatic strategy to environmental and climatic issues, from ethnic groups and religions to the progress of human rights cause.

"Many foreign officers have never been to China before, so they don't know much about China," said Professor Xu Guoping.

The enrollment survey of each year shows that more than 90 percent of the foreign military students want to learn more about China, Xu added.

The CDS not only opens a window for foreign military students to get knowledge about China, but also build a platform for communication and improvement, so as to help them enhance their "core competitiveness."

"We provide a platform for officers from all over the world to communicate with each other, diagnose problems for international security and jointly explore ways of maintaining world peace. It is an important manifestation of China taking responsibilities as a major country, especially in military area, " said Xu Hui, dean of the CDS.

The defense and strategic studies course and the international studies course have become internationally renowned brands with growing external attractions, Xu added.

"I can learn a lot from the courses offered by the CDS that are closely related with my work in Pakistan, such as international security and anti-terrorism, and I will use what I've learnt here in the practice of my own country," said Brigadier General Shabeer from Pakistan Army.
