Suddenly, an unsolved mystery occurred to us. When the spaceship just entered the orbit we saw Yang Liwei write some lines of words and held them up against a camera. But, because of the thin lines of his writing no one recognized what he had written down. When asked about that, he grinned: "What I wrote was: for the peace and progress of the mankind, the Chinese has come to space!"

The Beijing Space Town---crowds rushed to see the hero

When the colorful minibus just left the Badaling Expressway and still about two kilimeters before it reached the Town, loud and quick gongs and drums were clearly heard. At the gate of the Space Town, two giant red balloons carried two banners which read "Congratulations on China's first successful manned spaceflight!" and "Welcome back, China's first astronaut!"

According to rough calculations, more than 20, 000 people from different places gathered at the Space Town to welcome Yang Liwei back.

Among them were older generations of space workers. They made quiet and effective contributions to China's manned space flight program in the 1960s, many of them were returned experts from overseas studies.

He Quanxuan, a first-generation space worker and first director of the Beijing Space Medical Engineering Institute, stayed at home and opened a bottle of Maotai which was kept by him for 30 years. He cheered with his wife, drinking to the success. He told reporters: "That is my 45-year-old dream. Now it has come true and I'm very happy about it."

After Yang Liwei walked into his dormitory, Su Shuangning, chief commander of the astronaut system of China Manned Spaceflight Project, Xia Changfa, chief commander of China Manned Spaceflight Project Landing Grounds System, signed a formal transfer document of the astronaut. The printed "hand-over and take-over document" reads as follows:

"At 9:00am, on October 15, 2003, China sent its self-made Shenzhou V spaceship to conduct China's first manned space flight. Astronaut Yang Liwei orbited the earth 14 times aboard Shenzhou V, lasting 21 hours and 23 minutes. He returned smoothly to the target landing ground in Inner Mongolia at 6:23am on October 16. At 7:02, he walked out of the landed module unattended and reached the Beijing Space Town at 11:00am. Yang Liwei is now in good condition."

After the signing of the document, they shook hands with each other. The signing is a testimony of history and the glory of China.
