spokesman: Chinese national defense work indisputable
¡¡¡¡BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese national
defense work and military deployment are aimed
at safeguarding national security and territorial
integrity and, therefore, are indisputable,
a Foreign Ministry spokesman said here Friday.
¡¡¡¡Spokesman Kong Quan made the remark when
asked to a comment on a recent annual report
of the Pentagon on Beijing's military assessment,
noting that China. as a sovereign state, holds
an independent foreign policy of peace and its
national defense policy is defense-oriented.
¡¡¡¡China will keep on marching on the road of
peace and development, he acknowledged.
¡¡¡¡Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese
territory, Kong said, and the Chinese government
has always been adhering to the basic principles
of "peaceful reunification" and "one country,
two systems", and will try its best, with the
utmost sincerity, to realize a peaceful reunification.
¡¡¡¡The growth of the Taiwan-independence forces
is precisely the greatest threat to the stability
of the Taiwan Straits, Kong noted.
¡¡¡¡The US side has repeatedly agreed to abide
by the three Sino-US joint communiqu¨¦s, adhere
to the one-China policy and to oppose Taiwan's
independence, Kong said, urging the United States
to effectively honor its commitments.
¡¡¡¡Some people in the United States are attempting
to create an excuse for selling weapons to Taiwan
by overstating the Chinese military force and
military expenditure and clamoring the mainland's
threat to Taiwan, Kong said.
¡¡¡¡But the facts are more eloquent, for the
international community takes China as an active
force in maintaining world peace and promoting
common development, the spokesman said.
