Chinese leaders call for better work in population, resources,environmental protection

   BEIJING, March 10 (Xinhuanet) -- China will make more efforts on pressing population, resources and environmental protection issues that have close links with the people, said Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao here on Wednesday.

   The efforts were part of the concrete implementation of the concept of scientific development, Hu said at a grand seminar on population, resources and environmental protection issues, which was held in the Great Hall of the People.

   Hu said research work on the country's population strategy is of great importance and new mechanisms for family planning should be established.

   Wen Jiabao said China will continue to maintain a low birth rate and new family planning practices should be worked out for migrant families who live away from their homes.

   The leaders called on the governments at various levels to enact the strictest arable land protection rules and geological disaster prevention measures.

   According to Wen, China will continue its efforts to curb the excessive establishment of development zones and punish those who violate relevant laws.

   As for the issue of environmental protection, Wen said China should further harness environmental problems in key regions, sea areas, cities, and the Three Gorges reservoir by curbing rising dioxide sulfur, smoke and industrial dust discharge.

   Efforts for ecological protection are also of great importance,according to the leaders.

   Other Chinese leaders Wu Bangguo, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun and Luo Gan were also presentat the seminar.
