Five capabilities of Chinese peacekeepers
The Chinese engineering troops to be deployed to the Democratic
Republic of Congo have been ready for the UN peacekeeping operations.
The 175-strong troops, equipped with 63 vehicles and mechanic machines,
are divided into three teams, responsible for the road and bridge,
engineering construction and logistics support respectively.
The 18-24 months operation at UN's request requires Chinese engineering
troops to co-operate with UN peacekeeping staff by constructing roads,
bridges, simple houses and maintaining airports.
As introduced by an officer from the PLA's Headquarters of the General
Staff, these troops have obtained five desirable merits.
The first is engineering. With the help of constructing equipment
and minesweeping devices, these troops could complete a daily task
of reviving a five-kilometer road, a 10,000-square-meter airport or
houses measuring more than 200 square meters, plus minesweeping in
the construction area.
The second capability is survival in the wild. With a nine-square-meter
living area per capita, the temperature of the troops' dorms will
be adapted through air-conditioners. Water treatment devices, anti-epidemic
drugs and food of three-month needs are also prepared.
The third capability is self-defense. As an engineering company,
the troops have been well trained. Light armament is available in
case of being attacked.
The Fourth is transport. The troops are trained with loading and
unloading cargoes and military transport by ships, vehicles and planes.
The last is communication. The company is equipped with powerful
radio, commanding vehicles and advanced communications equipment,
which enable the troops to connect with headquarters at home.
