Chinese peacekeeping troops ready to set for
the DRC
Chinese peacekeeping troops are ready to set out
for the Democratic Republic of Congo for UN missions.
The troops include a 175-people engineering company
and 43-strong medical team. They are now waiting for orders to leave
from the UN, said Dai Shao'an, deputy director of the Peacekeeping
Affairs Office of the Chinese Ministry of National Defense.
The troops would be responsible for the construction
of bridges, roads and mobile houses.
China has deployed 1,450 peacekeeping troops in
10 areas since 1990. Among them, 650 are military inspectors, military
counselors and liaison officers, with the rest engineering troops.
Peacekeeping troops are unarmed forces sent according
to the UN Security Council or Assembly to help restore peace in
conflict areas.
