Peacekeepers prepare for the DRC mission
The Chinese peacekeeping troops have been ready
to set out for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for their
first mission outside of Asia.
The troops, deployed to the DRC, are a 175-member
engineering company and a 46-member medical team.
At the barracks of the engineering troops in the
outskirts of Beijing park scores of machinery vehicles, all dyed
in white with black letters "UN". Six commanding vehicles, equipped
with advanced communication system, will be connected with Beijing
all the time.
The engineering troops have three teams devoted
to road and bridge construction and maintenance.
Seven out of the 33 officers in the troops joined
the peacekeeping mission in Cambodia. One had been to the Democratic
Republic of Congo as a UN inspector.
The 142-engineer company included drivers, machinery
operators and mine sweepers, their jobs being constructing roads,
bridges, and airports. Their mission in the DRC would last 18 to
24 months. The UN is to decided when to substitute the troops.
The troops has prepared a food storage for three-months'
needs.
According to the Company Commander Yuan Chunguo,
soldiers would live in mobile rooms, each with an air-conditioner.
The dorms will have TVs and be Internet-connected. The engineering
troops also bring their military equipment, including pistols, machine
guns and night-vision devices.
The medical team composed of surgeons, physicians,
dentists, anaesthetists and nurses would be responsible for the
medical care of the peacekeeping soldiers and UN staffs. They would
also offer emergency treatment to locals.
All the medical team members, including 13 women
doctors, come from the Army's 202 Hospital in Northeast Shenyang.
A total of 4,432 peacekeeping troops from around
the world station in the Democratic Republic of Congo, headquartered
in the capital Kinshasa.
Since 1990, China have deployed 1,450 troops to
perform the UN peacekeeping mission in 10 areas. Four died when
carrying out their missions. At present, 50 military inspectors
are still working for the UN in 6 areas.
