UN
confers medal to Chinese martyrs
The United Nations recently conferred the Dag Hammarskjld Medal
to four Chinese servicemen who lost their lives during UN peacekeeping
operations.
The four Chinese are:Lei Runmin, a military observer to Iraq and
Kuwait, Liu Mingfang, a military observer to Cambodia, Chen Zhiguo
and Yu Shili, two engineering soldiers to Cambodia.
China has sent more than 1450 peacekeepers to participate in UN
peacekeeping operations since 1990. They are the first four Chinese
to lose their lives on duty.
In March 2002, the UN Security Council established the Dag Hammarskjld
Medal in recognition and commemoration of those who have lost their
lives as a result of service in UN peacekeeping operations.
The medal is named after Dag Hammarskjld, the second Secretary-General
of the United Nations, who contributed greatly to the development
of the concept of peacekeeping operations. He lost his life while
on a peacekeeping mission.
