Ye Xiaohui: a Ph.D student in the medical team

　　Among the first 13 Chinese servicewomen to join the UN peacekeeping force, Ye Xiaohui is the only Ph.D. student.

　　"I became a member of the peacekeeping medical team by accident," Ye told reporters.

　　She has been a Ph.D. student at China Medical University and is to graduate in the summer of 2003. She worked as a translator when a UN inspection team came to the hospital to check on the peacekeeping medical team. Her mastery in medical equipment and English impressed the inspection team.

　　"Thus I was enrolled into the medical team," said Ye. China Medical University agreed to postpone her dissertation by one year upon the request of the hospital.

　　She will serve as a laboratory technician in the medical team. " The Democratic Republic of Congo is located in the tropical area. It is infested with various infectious diseases. The medical conditions there are very poor and I have to perform tasks that are usually done by three technicians in normal conditions, therefore, It's a demanding job. " Ye said.

　　 "I major in AIDS treatment and monitoring. I may have the opportunity to do some research there because there are many HIV carriers in the DRC," Ye continued.

　　Ye has mastered the operation of the six medical devices to be used in her job. She has also been informed of the diseases in the country. "A tough job awaits me there."

　　Ye, 38, has a 12-year-old son. Her husband is also a doctor in another hospital, doing medical experiments.

　　 "I have stored pictures of my son in my computer," Ye said. "The medical team is equipped with satellite phones. So I can talk to my son and husband. I was also told we would have Internet. We can send e-mails to each other. "
