Backgrounder

  At the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Russia on May 8 and attend later in Moscow a ceremony to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War, Russia's term for WWII.

  During the visit, Xi and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, are expected to add new content to bilateral ties and break new ground together, showing the two countries' relationship has entered a new development phase.

  Xi will begin his visit to Kazakstan from May 7 at the invitation of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and pay a state visit to Belarus from May 10 to 12 at the invitation of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
