"Mobile oxygen bar" keeps transport servicemen healthy on plateau

english.chinamil.com.cn 2008-08-20

In mid-August, by traveling along with a truck transport regiment of the Tibet Military Command shouldering the transport mission in high-altitude oxygen deficient frontier defense areas, the reporter found that the living quality of the transport officers and men has been substantially improved as compared with that in the old days: there is adequate supply of oxygen in the vehicle-mounted high-pressure oxygen chamber. Regiment Commander Sun Zhigang told the reporter that the vehicle-mounted high-pressure oxygen chamber, which is called "mobile oxygen bar" by the officers and men, is very helpful to protecting the health of his men.

At 15:40 on 15 August, the transport convoy was to pass through the Mila Mountain Pass at an altitude of 5,200 meters above sea level. Drivers had inhaled oxygen in the vehicle-mounted high-pressure oxygen chamber in advance, thus they had little symptom of headache and chest distress. The reporter entered the chamber to have personal experience. In less than 5 minutes, he felt very refreshing. 35 minutes later, 100-odd trucks smoothly passed through the mountain pass amid heavy snow.

High-altitude oxygen deficiency is liable to cause fatigue of drivers, which in turn will give adverse impact to driving safety. In order to solve this problem, this regiment requested scientific research institute to help develop vehicle-mounted high-pressure oxygen chamber. In case officers and men have the symptom of altitude sickness, they only need to lie down in the high-pressure oxygen chamber, their heartbeat would soon return to normal. Since this regiment is equipped with "mobile oxygen bar", there is not a single occurrence of serious altitude sickness.
