ISLAMABAD, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A Pakistan-Indian committee is scheduled to
have a return visit to Indian jails next week to facilitate early release of the
Pakistani prisoners, said a statement from Pakistan's foreign ministry on
Saturday.
"Pakistan-India Judicial Committee on Prisoners will now visit Pakistani
prisoners in Indian jails in Amritsar, Jaipur and New Delhi from Aug. 18 to 23,"
said the statement.
The committee, comprising of eminent judges from both countries, was
established in January 2007 in a bid to speed up the release of hundreds of
Indians and Pakistanis held in each other's jails.
The Committee held its first meeting in February 2008 in New Delhi and
visited Indian prisoners in Pakistan in June 2008.
The two South Asian neighbors have arrested each other's fishermen,
charging them with violating their respective zones in the Arabian Sea. In
recent years, the two countries have conducted swap of prisoners as part of
goodwill gesture.
Pakistan released 34 fishermen and one civil prisoner on Thursday, the 61st
anniversary of its independence.
