english.chinamil.com.cn 2008-08-11

In order to present to the world a safe and peaceful Beijing Olympic Games, the provincial military commands and garrisons in Beijing and 5 co-hosting cities of Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang, Qingdao and Qinghuangdao have mobilized more than 40,000 militiamen and reservists to take part in the Olympic security work. These militiamen and reservists are now already at their assigned positions to actively assist the troops, public security police, and the armed police to carry out security patrol and safety check, and are ready to timely cope with emergencies.

According to sources, in light of unified arrangements made by the Olympic security work coordinating group, these provincial military commands (garrisons) have established special command setups to lead and coordinate the Olympic security work. In addition, they have also allocated special funds to purchase required communication and anti-riot equipment for militiamen and reservists.

During the Olympic Games, they not only shoulder the task of guarding important road sectors, bridges and underpasses, but also participate in Olympic security work such as urban air defense, anti-biological and anti-chemical attack, and medical aid, etc.
