After five years' active preparations, tens of thousands of armed police
officers and men entrusted with Olympic security mission have now completed all
their preparations for the Beijing Olympic Games. Yesterday, the Armed Police
Force (APF) held a mass-pledge ceremony, at which Meng Jianzhu, state councilor,
minister of public security and first political commissar of the Armed Police
Force, and Li Jinai, member of the Central Military Commission, director of the
General Political Department of the PLA and head of the leading group for
army-support-Olympic work, attended and addressed the ceremony.
According to sources, the security mission for the Beijing Olympic Games is
one of the most important tasks for the Armed Police Force since its
establishment in terms of the military strength and number of troops involved,
and the scope and duration of the mission. In light of the unified arrangements
made by the related authorities, the Armed Police Force is mainly responsible
for 12 security tasks including guarding Olympic venues, to assuring safety for
large-scale activities such as the Olympic opening and closing ceremonies, and
Olympic cultural festivals, peripheral security guard for airports used by the
Olympic Games, on-site security guard, guarding special aircraft, etc. At the
same time, it also shoulders four voluntary tasks such as medical support at the
Olympic Village.
