UNITED NATIONS, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations-African Union
peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) is facing a shortfall of more than
16,000 troops, and local support for the mission has become less, the mission
chief warned on Wednesday.
The mission currently has fewer than 10,000 troops and police officers,
compared to 26,000 mandated for full deployment, the Wall Street Journal quoted
UNAMID chief Rodolphe Adada as saying.
The number of monthly patrols across Darfur and the impoverished area in
western Sudan now only has 600 or so. Adada urged the international community to
fully support the mission, and he expected to deploy 80 percent of peacekeeping
forces by the end of the year.
