Pakistan reiterates its army responsible for action against terrorists in Pakistan

english.chinamil.com.cn 2008-06-16

ISLAMABAD, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan on Sunday once again clarified that it is the Pakistani troops who have the sole responsibility to take action against the terrorists on the Pakistani side of the border.

Pakistan said it has a clear position on the military action. On the Afghan side of the border, the Afghan national army (ANA), the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the U.S. army could take whatever action they want against the terrorists, Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Sadiq was quoted by the official APP news agency as saying.

However, he said, "on the Pakistani side of the border, it is the Pakistani troops who have the sole responsibility to take action."

"We have seen the news item quoting President Karzai but have not seen the transcript of his statement," Sadiq said.

He emphasized that any statement that negated the above-mentioned basic principle neither helped in the war on terrorism, nor promoted stability in the region.

Sadiq's comments followed the statement of Afghan President on Sunday who threatened to attack Taliban insurgents on the Pakistani soil, saying that his war-torn country had a right to do so out of "self-defense".

The warning came just days after U.S.-led forces carried out an air strike in a Pakistani tribal area bordering Afghanistan. Washington says it was targeting militants, but Pakistan says 11 of its soldiers were killed.
