Chinese naval medical team join hands with UK Leeds medical team in quake rescue

english.chinamil.com.cn 2008-06-11

People are getting used to spotting foreign medical staff from various countries bustling about on the site of quake rescue and relief in Sichuan. A medical team from the Chinese Navy joined hands on many occasions with Leeds medical team of the UK in their cooperative efforts of healing the wounded and rescuing the dying, and ended up in fostering a profound friendship in the battlefield and jointly putting into practice the universal ethic of the international humanitarianism.

The entire morning of May 26 saw seven medical staff of Leeds medical team joined doctor Zhang Chao and Zhu Zonghong, head nurse from the General Hospital of the PLA Navy, making their rounds to visit 50-odd patients, during which they learnt from each other's skills and drew on other's strong points to offset their own weaknesses. It turned out that the UK doctors are relatively conservative in administering medical treatment, and for that reason, they would rather give up a surgery than taking any risk in some cases, while the Chinese doctors are comparatively more decisive, which left deep impression on them. On the other hand, the Chinese medical staff admired the UK nurses' meticulousness in checking wounds and their respectful attitudes toward the patients.

Zhang Chao is quite interested in the full set of surgical instruments that doctor Toby brought over from the UK. "All types of surgical instruments are available for performing almost any operation, and yet, they are packed only in two small cases, making things extremely portable and handy!"

"As a matter of fact, many surgeries can be done better if only suitable instruments are available." Toby had no doubt about Zhang Chao's medical skills, but he believed that the Chinese doctors should have better and portable surgical instruments. He indicated that he would leave the set of surgical instruments to these Chinese friends when he returns back to the UK. He told Zhang Chao, "I am glad to have the opportunity to participate in the quake rescue and relief operation in China, especially having the opportunity to work with a practiced Chinese orthopedist. It is an unforgettable experience."
