Xu Caihou visits quake relief officers and men in Sichuan

  From June 5 to 9, Xu Caihou, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, made a special trip to the worst-hit areas in Sichuan visiting the officers and men conducting quake rescue and relief operation, expressing sympathy and solicitude to the quake-hit people, and inspecting and giving guidance to the troops in the work of quake rescue and relief. Among others, he laid stress on making further efforts in using the decisions and instructions made by the Central Committee of the CPC, the Central Military Commission and President Hu Jintao to unify the thinking of the troops, carrying forward the fine traditions of obeying the command of CPC, serving the people and being brave and skilful in battle, giving full play to the advantages of ideological and political work, ensuring to maintain exuberant combat effectiveness among the troops, and rounding off the follow-up quake rescue and relief duties so as to make greater contributions to the total victory of the quake rescue and relief operation.

  Xu Caihou came successively to the quake-struck areas of Mianyang, Beichuan, Anxian, Wenchuan, Dujiangyan and Pengzhou where he visited the officers and men of the PLA and the Armed Police Force battling in frontline of quake rescue and relief. He also went down to the field hospitals, tent camps of the local people, schools and kindergartens set up with the aid of the troops to see and express solicitude to the children and teenagers.

  Acting on the important directive of President Hu Jintao, the General Political Department of the PLA held a meeting on the political work of the quake rescue and relief troops on June 8 in Chengdu, at which, Xu Caihou conveyed the gist of President Hu Jintao's important directive and discussed how to implement President Hu Jintao's important directive together with commanders of the troops for the sake of working out specific measures to further strengthen the political work among the quake rescue and relief troops.
