Liao Xilong: Army should be at the head of society in afforestation

english.chinamil.com.cn 2008-06-06

When meeting the leaders of the National Afforestation Committee, Liao Xilong, member of the Central Military Commission, director of the PLA Environment Protection and Afforestation Committee and director of the General Logistics Department of the PLA, said that the PLA would invest more efforts in the drive to build green and ecological barracks and would remain committed to outdoing the society and staying at the head in afforestation.

Liao Xilong noted that afforestation and environmental improvement were not only accounted to be a strategic task to boost the sustainable national social and economic development but also an important mission of the people's army. In recent years, the PLA and the Armed Police Force have made great efforts to carry out ecological improvement and achieved some accomplishments in greening the barracks, in afforestation of the barren hills, waste land and barren beach, and in the protection of forest resources, as well as in participating in and supporting the local ecological projects. Basically, the independent military system has been integrated into the national program and the barracks are developing from being green barracks to ecological ones.
