english.chinamil.com.cn 2007-10-16

MANILA, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine Navy will launch a three-day small-scale military exercise with the Royal Australian Navy on Wednesday in central Philippines, a day after the start of a routine annual military drill with the United States forces.

Dubbed as "PN-RAN Exercise Lumbas 2007", the co-drill will start as soon as HMAS Parramatta, the lone Australian ship taking part in the activity, docks at the port of Cebu City in central Philippines, Lt. Alex Garso, spokesman of the Naval Forces Central, said over phone.

Garso said three Philippine military ships will be involved in the exercise, and at least 200 to 300 Filipino sailors and about the same number of Australians will be participating.

Garso said the training is conducted on an annual basis for the past five years. The command post exercises under the training are expected to include a series of scenario-driven activities that will engage the various maritime and government agencies in conducting maritime and security operations.

The Philippine and U.S. authorities will announce on Monday the launch of the "Talon Vision" exercise which will be involving thousands of Filipino and American forces. The drill will last until Oct. 31.

Unlike the training with the Australians, the exercises with the Americans will involve amphibious operations between the two forces.
