Xu Caihou, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, emphasized yesterday at the third plenary meeting of the leading group responsible for the army's participation in and support of the development of the western region of China that it is a glorious mission and heavy responsibility for the army to take part in and support the development of the western region of China. The army should hold high the great banner of socialism with Chinese characteristics, adhere to the guidance of Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of "Three Represents", profoundly implement the scientific outlook on development, pluck up enthusiasm, be down-to-earth in work and make great efforts to elevate the work of the army's support of the development of the western region of China to a new level so as to make new contributions to the building of a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way and the creation of a new prospect for the cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.

　　Zhang Li, deputy chief of general staff, Jia Ting'an, deputy director of the General Political Department, Li Maifu, deputy director of the General Logistics Department, Zhang Jianqi, deputy director of the General Armaments Department of the PLA and the members and the liaison personnel of the leading group attended the meeting.
