Liang Guanglie, member of the Central Military Commission and chief of
general staff of the PLA, met with the American Foreign Policy Council
Delegation headed by Gen. Richard Myers (retired), former chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff in Beijing yesterday.
Liang Guanglie first expressed warm welcome to the delegation. He said that
the ties between the two militaries are important component parts of the Sino-US
relations. Developing the ties between the two militaries is in the common
interests of the two sides and is conducive to the peace and stability of the
region and the world at large. China and the US have carried out fruitful
consultation and cooperation in the fields of anti-terrorism, non-proliferation
and regional security, etc. This is of important significance towards enhancing
our mutual understanding, broadening consensus and promoting co-operation. He
said that since the relations between the two countries are now exhibiting a
good momentum of development, the ties between the two militaries are also
expected to develop healthily and stably.
Liang Guanglie continued to say that on the Taiwan question, China is ready
to do its utmost with maximum sincerity to secure the prospect of a peaceful
reunification. But we will never put up with "Taiwan independence", never allow
any one to make Taiwan secede from China by any means.
Myers expressed his appreciation to Liang Guanglie for finding time to meet
him. He said that at present, the US-China military relations are seeing good
growth and it's very important for both sides to make efforts to enhance their
military ties. The exchanges between the two militaries should play an active
role in promoting the development of the relations between the two countries.
