Liang Guanglie, member of the Central Military Commission and chief of
general staff of the PLA, held talks yesterday in Beijing with Gen. George
Waitara, commander of the Tanzanian People's Defense Forces.
Liang Guanglie opened the talks by extending his warm welcome to the visit
of the delegation led by Gen George Waitara. He said that since the
establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tanzania, the friendly
cooperative ties between the two countries have been continuously developing
steadily and therefore, China and Tanzania can be called all-weather friends.
The Chinese armed forces and the Tanzanian armed forces enjoy profound
traditional friendship. In recent years, the reciprocal visits at the top level
of the two militaries and the personnel exchanges have been frequent and the
fields of cooperation have been swelling constantly. Thanks to the concerted
efforts of both parties, the friendly cooperative ties between the two
militaries surely will develop further.
Liang Guanglie also briefed his guests on China's views on the
international situation and army building.
Waitara said that Tanzania values very much the friendship with China and
appreciates the assistance and support that China has been providing to Tanzania
for a long period of time. He also emphasized that the Tanzanian government
will, as ever, firmly stick to the one-China policy.
Their meeting was preceded by a welcome ceremony staged by Liang Guanglie
for the visit of Waitara.
At the invitation of Liang Guanglie, Gen. Waitara and his party arrived in
China on September 24 for a week-long official and good-will visit.
