The national militia and reserve duty political work conference was held in
Beijing over Sept. 26-27 in Beijing. Xu Caihou, member of the Secretariat of the
CPC Central Committee and vice chairman of the Central Military Commission,
attended and addressed the conference. Hua Jianmin, state councilor and
concurrently secretary general of the State Council, presided over the
conference.
Xu Caihou pointed out that the militia and the reserve duty forces are the
important components of our armed forces and likewise the important force for
constructing and safeguarding the motherland. The intensification and
improvement of the political work for the militia and reserve duty forces under
the new situation are the inevitable demands for guaranteeing the correct
direction of the building of the militia and reserve duty forces, the actual
needs for consolidating the organization and strengthening cohesion of the
militia and the reserve duty forces and the important assurance to carry out
functions and missions and to fulfill various tasks. The Party committees,
governments and military institutions at all levels should profoundly understand
the important instructions of the Central Committee of the CPC and Chairman Hu
Jintao on the construction of the reserve forces for national defense, place the
political work for the militia and the reserve duty forces on an important
position in light of the overall interests of the Party and the country and by
looking at it from the strategic height of safeguarding the national security
interests and that of development, and grasp the work firmly in real earnest,
make great efforts to it and produce a marked effect in it with the strong sense
of responsibility and mission.
The conference was held with the approval of the CPC Central Committee, the
State Council and the Central Military Commission. Entrusted by Li Jinai, member
of the Central Military Commission and director of the General Political
Department of the PLA, Tang Tianbiao, the deputy director of the General
Political Department of the PLA, made a report on the political work of the
militia and reserve duty.
