With the approval of the Central Military Commission, the symposium on the
theory of the PLA's historical mission in the new century and new period,
sponsored by the National Defense University under the mandate from the General
Political Department of the PLA, opened in Beijing yesterday. Xu Caihou, member
of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPC and vice chairman of the
Central Military Commission, underscored at the opening of the symposium that
the whole army should have a sound grasp of the scientific connotation and great
significance of Chairman Hu Jintao's important remarks on the historical mission
of the PLA in the new century and new period, put into effect the scientific
concept of development in an all-round way, make effort to bring about a new
situation in terms of national defense and army building and carry out the
sacred historical mission of the PLA effectively.
Li Jinai, member of the Central Military Commission and director of the
General Political Department of the PLA, presided over the opening ceremony.
Xu Caihou pointed out that bearing in mind the fulfillment of the three
major historical missions of the CPC and safeguarding the fundamental interests
of the state and the nation, Chairman Hu Jintao has made important remarks on
the historical mission of the army in the new century and new period on the
basis of determining scientifically the historical position of China's national
development and army building in the new century and new period and by basing on
the important thought of the "Three Represents" and on Jiang Zemin's thinking on
national defense and army building in particular. Hu Jintao solemnly stated: The
armed forces should provide mighty support for the CPC to entrench its position
as the ruling party, render staunch security assurances for safeguarding the
important strategic opportunity period for national development, offer powerful
strategic backup for defending the national interests and play an important role
in maintaining the world peace and promoting the common development of all
countries. Hu Jintao's important remarks not only come down in the same
continuous line with the important thoughts of Comrades Mao Zedong, Deng
Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin on the historical mission of the PLA, but also keep
pace with the times, hence a significant new innovation on the military guiding
theory of the Party. All troops of the PLA should digest fully the great
theoretical value and practical meaning of Chairman Hu Jintao's important
remarks and earnestly enhance the level of consciousness of studying and
implementing them.
Leaders from the general headquarters/departments and the major military
units of the PLA, leaders of the Armed Police Force and leaders of the leading
organs of the major military units as well as the responsible persons of the
publicity departments took part in the symposium.
