Liang Guanglie meets with Indian military leaders

  General Liang Guanglie, member of the Central Military Commission and chief of general staff of the PLA, paid calls in New Delhi to Indian military leaders including General J.J. Singh, chief of staff of the Indian Army, Admiral Arun Prakash, chief of staff of the Indian Navy, and Marshal S. P. Tyagi, chief of staff of the Indian Air Force, during which he exchanged views with them on international and regional security issues, national defense and army building, and others issues of common concern, and reached broad consensus with them.

  Liang Guanglie said that developing Sino-Indian friendly relations is in the fundamental interests of the peoples of the two countries, and is conducive to the peace and stability in the region and the world at large. The Sino-Indian military relations constitute an important part of the relations between the two countries. The Chinese Armed Forces are willing to work together with the Indian Armed Forces to actively implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, take active measures to promote mutual understanding and trust, develop friendship and cooperation between the two sides, and make concerted efforts with the Indian side to maintain harmony and peace in the border regions and push for comprehensive and in-depth development of relations between the two countries.

  Indian military leaders indicated that the continual improvement of relations between India and China and their militaries are conducive to common development of the two countries as well as peace and stability in the region. The Indian side is willing to work together with the Chinese side in the areas of common concern, and to strengthen exchange and cooperation between the two sides so as to further the relations between the two militaries.

  Liang Guanglie arrived in New Delhi on May 23, 2005 on a six-day official goodwill visit to India at the invitation of the Indian Armed Forces. His entourage includes Lt. Gen. He Weirong, chief of staff of the PLA Air Force, Lt. Gen. Liu Fengjun, deputy commander of the Beijing Military Area Command and commander of the Beijing Garrison, and Maj. Gen. Wang Guosheng, chief of staff of the Lanzhou Military Area Command.
