The reporter witnessed on Sept. 7 the following scene happened on the surging Xiangjiang River: Flood-fighting field commanding posts, field clinics, field barracks and field power stations were set up one after another on the vast expanse of dike in as short as just two hours. This close-to-real-operation, so to speak, flood-fighting exercise conducted by a pontoon bridge regiment of the Guangzhou Military Area Command has demonstrated that the usual practice of finding accommodation in the local residents' houses and setting up woks and cooking in the field would become history. Field support integration including command, mobility, survivability and rush-to-repair for flood-fighting in the regiment has primarily been shaped up.
The pontoon bridge regiment, which has made meritorious services for several times, is likewise an "iron fist" in flood fighting and rescue of the army. According to the briefing given by the leaders of the regiment, in order to see to it that a series of newly issued equipment become battle effective as quick as possible, the regiment has been energetically exploring an effective integrated field support system in flood-fighting and rescue by taking into consideration of short-term flood fighting, continuous flood-fighting, multiple spots and multiple directions' flood-fighting as well as emergency mechanized flood fighting. They have also realized network inter-linking with that of the provincial military command and established a "database of the surrounding areas' rivers". As a result, all data on rivers, hydrology, roads, bridges, culverts and landform can be seen on the network.
At the same time, they have also boldly developed the functions of new equipment. By making full use of flood-fighting exercise and battle case study, they have worked out over 30 scenarios on setting up temporary commanding post, nigh lighting support for risk-elimination, muddy road building, etc. to ensure the integration of the mobility, accommodation and rushing to repair ability in flood-fighting, which has effectively upgraded the comprehensive field support ability.
