Exchanging role-playing in exercise to boost combat power

PLA Daily 2004-08-10

It was at the peak of summer when a live-fire confrontational tactical exercise was launched by a group army of the Beijing Military Area Command. In the exercise, the method of exchanging role-playing between the "Red Army" and the "Blue Army" was adopted in a series of confrontational drills. The exercise, starting from the shore of the Bohai Sea up to the plateau beyond the Great Wall, covered a distance of several thousand kilometers, and along the route many dangerous situations were set to let its troops practice their combat skills. The "Blue Army" would launch air strikes against its opponents from time to time, which would be followed by electronic interference. In the face of these attacks, the commander of the "Red Army" remained calm and dealt with them with various fighting methods. Eventually he succeeded in tying down the main force of the "Blue Army" and forced a penetration of stoppage of the "enemy".

As soon as the exercise troops arrived at the assembly area, a joint operation involving various services and arms immediately started before the troops had a chance to catch their breath. The "Red Army's" fighters launched first wave of air strike against the key targets of the "Blue Army", at the same time its artilleries started bombardment of the forward edge of the "Blue Army" with intense fire, which was followed by the soul-stirring airborne and anti-airborne, encirclement and anti-encirclement, assault and anti-assault operations between the two opposing sides. Afterwards, when the first round of confrontational drill ended, the "Red Army" and the "Blue Army" would swap their role-playing in the second round of confrontational exercise.

This exercise is made up of six rounds of confrontational exercises, which had been conducted in a consecutive way, and the "Red Army" and the "Blue Army" had exchanged their role-playing many times in the exercise. This intense multi-training-subjects exercise, conducted in a very large area and covered a very long distance, has not only honed the fighting stamina of the troops, but also boosted the commander's capability of flexile application of tactical and technical skills on the battlefield.
