On August 6, a piece of happy news came out from the purchasing station of a depot of the Chengdu Military Area Command: The 7,000-plus tons of rice and over 2,000 tons of non-staple food the station purchased for the frontier defense troops stationing in Tibet this year have all passed the examinations jointly conducted by military and local food authorities and reached the required standard. So far, the station has purchased hundreds of thousands tons of staple and non-staple food in the past 25 year and not a single case of these purchase has ever been found inferior in quality, hence being praised as the Guardian of Food.
The purchasing station of the depot is responsible for purchasing and delivering food to troops stationing in Tibet. To make sure that the officers and men will be getting the trustworthy food, the staff of the purchasing station is always rushing around to the high quality food production areas and supply centers covering 8 provinces and cities in order to select and decide the right center to do their purchase. They have not been the least bit negligent in selecting the best possible quality food, in signing contracts with the chosen supply centers, and in overseeing the processing, packing and delivery of the food.
The station is very strict with every step of food purchasing. Canned meat, one of the major nutrients for the frontier defense troops, has to pass strict procedures called "seven checkouts system" to be qualified--- to wit, the qualification of manufacturers, meat quality, water content, flour grade, raw material used, packaging procedure and employee's health condition. A failure in any of these checkouts will mean that this particular kind of food is rejected.
