Division in Xinjiang tempers troops in Karakorum and Kunlun Mountains

PLA Daily 2004-08-09

In mid-summer, a division of the Xinjiang Military Area Command took its troops to a strange area in the Karakorum and Kunlun Mountains to conduct combined tactics drill under high-tech conditions in frigid mountainous area, in order to temper the overall fighting capacity of its troops under harsh natural conditions.

During the training, the division gradually shifted its training ground from 3800m to 5600m above sea level, with training contents changing from individual soldier drill to combined training. So far it has accomplished 20-odd tests for large equipment, such as their maximum speed and maximum climbing capability at different altitude terrain conditions, climates; accomplished 40-odd tests for various firearms, such as the maximum rapid of fire and maximum firing range, etc. Under severe oxygen deficiency conditions, the officers and men conducted 4-hour long-range raid and then worked at an altitude of 5000 m for long hours, through which the division has obtained several data on ultimate limit of life. At the same time, in light of scarcity of vegetation on the Kunlun Mountain, which gives adverse effect for camouflage efforts, the division has developed a number of new camouflage equipment and explored several new camouflage methods.
