Engineer regiment trains hard to hone waterway transport support capabilities

PLA Daily 2004-06-29

On the early morning of June 17, the air was permeated with heavy smoke and huge water columns shot up into the sky at a certain sector along the 500m-wide Songhua River. A field engineer regiment of the Shenyang Military Area Command was having a bridge-laying exercise here under close-to-real-combat situation. In the exercise, pontoon-carrying vehicles accurately cast pontoons and ferrying pontoon rafts into the river one after another. And then 800 officers and men used various equipment to fix pontoons or pontoon rafts together to form a pontoon bridge. At the same time, ten command boats plied on the waters to carry out patrol and guard mission. An hour later, a 60-ton pontoon bridge was in place, and over 100 pieces of heavy equipment were driven smoothly across the pontoon bridge.

In recent years, in light of the requirements of the real combat, the regiment constantly increased the training intensity of its pertinent training subjects and has successfully explored more than 40 ferry-building plans suited to different water areas such as those in coastal areas and at low riverbeds, etc. It also innovated over ten kinds of practical equipment to boost its waterway transport capability.
