A guided missile regiment explores new fighting methods in Gobi Desert

PLA Daily 2004-06-11

At 4:50 on the morning of June 7, the piercing alarm sounded at the camping site of a guided missile regiment under the Air Force of the Jinan Military Area Command deep in Gobi Desert in northwest China. At the sound of this alarm signal, the commanders swiftly entered the command post while other officers and men rushed to their respective positions. Another day of combat drill for this regiment started.

In order to build up the emergency mobile fighting capacity of its troops under complicated circumstance, all the officers and men of this regiment marched to the Gobi Desert in northwest China with full equipment in early May to carry out intensified trainings with focus on exploration of new fighting methods and pertinent trainings to boost their field mobile capacity and overall fighting capacity. The reporter saw at the drill ground that the regiment carried out several drills in succession, such as land-and-air joint offensive operation, air blocking operation, intercepting incoming hostile aircraft in concert with aviation units, annihilating provocative "enemy planes". Moreover, it also adopted flexible measures, including anti-reconnaissance and anti-strong electromagnetism disturbance to counter "enemy's" strong electromagnetic wave disturbance, and launched over 20 simulated guided missiles to destroy more than 10 air targets.

During more than one month's field camped trainings, the officers and men of this regiment overcame various difficulties brought by harsh climate conditions in the Gobi Desert. They trained hard and managed to focus on one training subject each day.
