A brigade of the Guangzhou Military Area Command (MAC) voluntarily helped local people of Li and Miao nationalities living in mountain areas to develop the ecotype economy, leading them on to the road of prosperity, thus making even closer the military-civilian relationships. Days ago, the brigade was praised by its higher level in the form of issuing a notice of commendation.
The brigade is stationed in the hinterland of the Wuzhi Mountains, where the economic foundation is poor and most of the residents there are of minority ethnic groups. Officers and men in the brigade took "wherever they station they should bring benefits to the people" as their responsibility and insisted on carrying out the activities on "protecting the ecology and helping the poor" among the local people. They opened cultural evening schools in villages, presented books of agricultural techniques and donated aid-the-poor funds to people of Li and Miao nationalities, thus providing intelligence, technological and material supports for the local people in their poverty-alleviation efforts. Besides, the troops helped the local people plant ten thousand mu economic crops in the mountain areas enclosed for afforestation, which could produce high benefits, guided villagers to raise fine fowls and birds in manmade forests and rubber woods, so as to establish solid economic base. Thanks to the all-out support of the officers and men of the brigade, most of the local people of Li and Miao nationalities have shaken off poverty and are enjoying a better life.
