PLA Daily 2004-06-08

On May 14, the Neurosurgery Department of the Guangzhou General Hospital of the Guangzhou Military Area Command carried out a world leading operation---- brain function area operation under the condition of awaking anesthesia, for a company commander of a frontier defense unit.

The commander had suffered headache for three years. In late April, the Neurosurgery Department of the Guangzhou General Hospital of the Guangzhou Military Area Command diagnosed his illness as brain tumor. The tumor has invaded into the function area of the brain like roots with a diameter of 5cm. If not removed soon, it would endanger his life.

Wang Weimin, director of the Neurosurgery Department, worked out the operation plan of awaking anesthesia brain operation and operated on the patient himself. Before operation, the doctor and the philologian made physical and brain function examination and assessment.

During the operation, they first made an incision as big as a fist on the skull of the patient and then gradually relieved the local anesthesia under the control of computer. With the soft call of the anesthetist, the patient slowly opened his eyes. Meanwhile, the operation was going on orderly and intensively. The philologian pointed to the images on the monitor and asked the patient, "What is this?" "Airplane"´. From the precise answers of the patient to a series of questions, Wang knew that the nerve of the function area was not damaged. When the tumor was removed successfully, they applied anesthesia on the patient again for the purpose of suturing the skull. It took five hours to complete the operation.
