Top-notch staff officers act as commanders in exercise

PLA Daily 2004-01-08

At the time when the New Year was just ushered in, a group army of the Guangzhou Military Area Command immediately started three-services joint-operation training. Corps commanders, division commanders, brigade commanders and regiment commanders gathered at the officers' simulating training center to watch an joint operation exercise commanded by 20 officers from different services and arms. In the exercise, the reporter first saw a group of aircraft launched a wave of attack against "enemy" key targets, and then a warship formation delivered strong firepower against the "enemy" forward positions. After that, gun helicopters, self-propelled guns, anti-tank missiles started to bombard targets in the depth of enemy's defense. In the exercise, the three services coordinated closely with each other, showing strong joint operational capability.

The commanders commanding this joint-operation exercise were all top-notch staff officers who had just returned from their posts as acting commanders of various units in different services and arms. According to the group army commander, the group army was in want of joint-operation and joint-training talents, in order to solve this problem, the group army took the initiative to get contact with neighboring services and arms to establish a joint-operation and joint-training mechanism. In addition, for more than 10 occasions, it organized exchange of experiences, exchange of training and exchange of officers to be acting commanders in each other's units with neighboring services and arms, through which it has trained a group of backbone officers who know how to command three-services joint-operation.

In this simulated exercise, the group army rejected its old unilateral training method; instead, it combined its training subjects organically with those of the navy and the air force. By doing so, it had not only improved coordinated operation capability of various arms and services, but also boosted its own fighting skills and tactical training quality. In addition, the group army also explored over 10 new fighting methods, such as converged artillery fire to achieve mastery of the air.
