The General Hospital of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) has made new achievements in the treatment of cervical vertebra diseases. Recently, the hospital successfully performed an artificial cervical vertebral disc arthroplasty operation for a patient, the first such operation in Asia, reflecting the treatment of cervical vertebra disease and cervical vertebral disc herniation disease in China has reached the world's advanced level.
On Dec. 3, 2003, the hospital performed an artificial cervical vertebral disc arthroplasty operation for a patient after careful planning and thorough preparations. Wang Yan, director of the Department of Orthopaedics, did the operation personally for a 49-year-old male patient, who had suffered from neck aching for more than 8 years and his hands and body have been numb for 7 months. The operation adopted the world advanced technology --- artificial disc prosthesis design, which has the functions of normal cervical vertebral disc after being implanted into human body, thus effectively solving the problems of traditional treatment. The neck aching and numbness of the body will disappear immediately after the operation and the patient can be discharged from the hospital in three days.
Since December 2003, the Department of Orthopaedics of the hospital has successfully performed artificial cervical vertebra intervertebral disc arthroplasty operations for four patients.
