 PLA Daily 2003-12-22

In light of the change of the composition of recruits, namely an increase of percentage of college graduates, a unit under the Beijing Military Area Command changed the concept of leading the troops accordingly and assigned jobs to recruits in light of their academic background so as to let college-graduate soldiers to give full play to their knowledge and abilities. Up to early December this year, among the more than 120 college-graduate soldiers in this unit, 80% were awarded either "Logistics Support Pacesetter" or "Technical Master-hand" and 90 of them won merit citations.

In the past two years, the leaders of the unit studied carefully on how to achieve the new growth of its support capability through making full use of the knowledge and ability of college-graduate solders. In light of the characteristics of these college-graduate soldiers, such as high in academic level, active in thinking and bold in creation, leaders at all levels actively created conditions for them to give full play to their talents. Every year, after the completion of recruits trainings, the organization and discipline department would assign soldiers to their posts according to their majors and strong points, so as to let them give full play to their talents. At the same time, the unit also adopted "trainings by experts" and other measures to help college-graduate soldiers to turn their knowledge into working ability as soon as possible.

According to Political Commissar Zhang Xike, after a period of on-the-job practice, these college-graduate soldiers soon began to show their ability at their posts. Zhang Xinchao, a graduate of Northwestern Polytechnical University, with knowledge learned at the university, developed "Bogie Device for Dispatch of Large Equipment", which won a third-class Military Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and he himself was award a second-class merit citation. Liang Guohua, majoring in statistics during his undergraduate studies, devoted himself to the research of an effective combination module to improve the overall support efficiency of logistics support unit and achieved remarkable results. Early this year, he was quite outstanding during the time he acted as the platoon leader, and his platoon was awarded third-class collective merit. Ma Chengzhong, a college graduate majoring in computer science, participated in the digital program of the unit and the software developed by him saved several hundred thousand yuan for the unit.

Recently in a support drill organized by the unit, the reporter saw college- graduate solders were displaying their talents everywhere in various logistics support activities, such as delivery of ammunition to the front with new equipment, high-speed loading and unloading of vehicles, emergency laying of bridges, fast laying of field POL pipeline; and from the delivery of materials by clicking of mouse to the search of traffic information via Internet´
