Moving story of transporting winter materials for the frontier guards

 PLA Daily 2003-12-19

Background information: Motuo is the only county without highway in the country, the natural environment and living condition is very harsh. In 1984, the Central Committee of the CPC, the State Council, and the Central Military Commission made a decision to change the material transportation in Motuo from using military people to civilian transportation. Ever since then, about 16, 000 people of the minorities began their story of supporting the army.

In mid November, the reporter accompanied the frontier defense troops to transport the last batch of winter material and entered Motuo. After escaping death narrowly for several times, I experienced the so-called dangerous Motuo road in person.

Each of the laborers of Milin County carried a backpack on their back. With many layers of wrappings, I don't know what's inside and felt a little curious.

When I passed across the "Laohuzui" (Tiger's Mouth), I happened to find a soldier in coma. When Zha Ba saw this, he unwrapped his backpacker immediately. I found that it's Tibetan Wine. After Zha Ba poured some wine into the mouth to the soldier, the soldier came to himself and said that his name is Dai Haibing. Stationed deep in the mountain and jungle 40 miles away, that was the first day for him to transport winter material. Because of lacking of energy, he got fainted. When departing with Dai, Zha Ba gave the wine to him.

Motuo is hard to go through, let alone with goods on the back. Till now I learned that the backpack is full of Tibetan Wine. However, they did not carry that for themselves, but for the officers and men of the frontier defense troops.

Because I and Qu Zhu went together for 3 days, he gradually told me some of his stories. The 32-year old Qu Zhu is from Dazhuokasan Village of the Paizhen Town. More than 10 years ago, his grandfather, his father and he arrived here, to transport material for the troops. The first day they arrived in Motuo, Qu asked him grandfather and father to go back because he thought it's too tough for them.

But his grandfather said: "Without the Communist Party of China, there's no happy life for us today; without the PLA, we will still be in poverty. We must support the army building from one generation to another." Qu's grandfather's words impressed him deeply.

Later on, Qu's grandfather and father died successively. But he persisted in transporting materials for the army. Every year, he would run through Motuo for about 10 times and transport about 1,600 kinds of goods weighing over 20 tons. He said excitedly: "I will ask my son and grandson to continue the job if there's no highway then."
